　　　These new data suggest the moon’s cycles can subtly affect sleep cycles．These internal cycles may be similar to the roughly 24-hour rhythms driven by the body’s internal ‘‘clock”. One big difference：The body’s clock is set by sunlight．
　　　The Swiss team doesn’t know how the moon affects sleep．The gravitational attraction of the moon causes ocean tides to rise and fall．But that force is too weak to affect sleep，Cajochen says．He suspects some internal body clock may be tied to the moon cycles．Lunar cycles have been noted in sea animals that keep track of the tides．There may be another explanation，says David Dinges . This sleep researcher at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia says that the body clock is very sensitive to light at night．Volunteers’ sleep could have been altered by exposure to extra moonlight before arriving at the lab．
