Text 1
M: Is it hard to find a parking place? Or shall we take a bus?
W: Why bother with the car? It’s only a ten-minute walk.
Text 2
M: I want to set up an appointment with the doctor.
W: OK. Please fill out these forms. A nurse will be with you shortly.
Text 3
W: Hello, how may I help?
M: Oh … er … look, there’s only one towel in the bathroom and I need at least two.
W: Oh, I’ll ask the housekeeper to put some extra towels in your room right away.
Text 4
W: Could you mail these letters for me, please?
M: More letters? Your friends are going to be very happy to hear from you.
Text 5
M: So, what do you do in your free time?
W: I like playing soccer. What do you like?
M: Nothing special. Just hang around.
W: Come to a match with me. You might get interested in the game.
Text 6
W: So what’s this new computerized search system like?
M: Well, it’s certainly easier to use than I thought it would be. I mean it’s quite user-friendly.
W: So how do you search?
M: There’s nothing to it. Look. You just type in the title or the author of the book you’re looking for, and there, it returns the number of the shelf you’ll find it on. It even tells you if it’s reserved.
W: Clever!
M: Isn’t it?
Text 7
M: You didn’t forget to pack the camera this year, did you?
W: No, George, it’s in your hand luggage.
M: And the traveller’s cheques? Have you got them in your bag?
W: Yes, George. You ask me the same questions every time we go away.
M: I know, and you still manage to forget something.
W: Well, next year you can see to everything yourself. Now, calm down and give me the tickets!
M: The tickets? What tickets? Don’t tell me you left them on the kitchen table!
Text 8
M: Let’s go over the arrangements for my trip to Bombay.
W: Sure. Here’s your schedule. You’re flying at 9:55 on Monday evening. You’ll have to check in about two hours before, so I’ve arranged for a car to pick you up from the office at 6:55.
M: Good. Now, when am I seeing Mr. Shah?
W: Tuesday afternoon at two. By the way, Mr. Mjundar is coming to the meeting as well.
M: That’s good news. We won’t have to arrange a separate meeting. Now, has my visa arrived?
W: No, not yet. I’ll phone the embassy later and find out if they’ve sent it off yet.
M: Thanks. And could you order some traveller’s checks?
W: Sure. I’ll go to the bank right now.
M: Thanks.
Text 9
W: Hey, Alan. Congratulations!
M: Thanks, Betty. What luck, huh? I still can’t believe I won 200,000 dollars.
W: So, what are you going to do with the money?
M: Well, I’m trying to decide. Emily has got accepted into some great private colleges. We’re very proud of her.
W: Wow. Private schools have small classes, so Emily would get more attention.
M: Yeah. And a private school education might help her get a better job in the future. But those schools are so expensive. And I have to make a big choice. My mother is 85 years old. My wife and I are thinking about moving her into a nursing home. She needs some help doing everyday things like cooking and just getting around.
W: Well, at least she wouldn’t be lonely.
M: Yeah. I still keep thinking there are lots of good universities around here that don’t cost quite as much as a private school.
Text 10
W: Entertaining at home can be great fun but it can be stressful, too. I’d like to give you a few smart tips about how to be the host!
First of all, it’s a good idea to give yourself plenty of preparation time. Don’t leave things until the last minute. So, do your shopping the day before. Try to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in your home. Lovely, fresh flowers are great. And don’t forget to have lots of candles. Their soft, warm light will help your guests relax.
But the most important thing of all is the food! Keep it simple. Don’t make anything that is too difficult! First, make a good starter. But remember, variety is the spice of life, so have lots of salad and fresh vegetables to go with your main meal. To end your evening, serve a good dessert and some fresh fruit.
If you don’t think you can manage all this, then you can always call up one of the many catering companies listed in the phone book.
