VI. 听力录音原文:
Text 1
M: Hi, this is John. I’m calling from Australia. I am at a conference in Sydney. Remember?
W: Oh, right. What time is it there?
M: It’s 10:00 p.m. And it’s four o’clock in the afternoon in Los Angeles. Right?
W: No, four o’clock in the morning.
Text 2
M: Hi, Jane. What is your job like?
W: I have to be ready for work when the bank opens at 9:00 every day. Before opening my cage window, I put the cash in my drawer. Then I make sure that the audio system is working. After checking the machine, I sit at my window, ready for work — and for daydreaming.
Text 3
W: If I were you, I’d take the subway to work. Driving in that rush-hour traffic is terrible.
M: But usually there aren’t any seats left on the subway!
W: Standing on the subway two or three minutes doesn’t matter at all.
Text 4
M: I’ll meet you at the office at about six.
W: When did you say?
M: At about six. Mr. Wang will also come.
W: Who will come?
M: Mr. Wang, the instructor. We’ll discuss next week’s class outing.
W: Sorry. I didn’t quite catch what you said. It’s too noisy here.
Text 5
M: You look a little worried, Helen. What’s wrong with you?
W: I always feel sleepy during the day and can’t concentrate on my work.
Text 6
W: I’m going to be home late tonight You’ll have to have supper on your own.
M: Why is that?
W: There is a big sale at New Mart today. Everything is either “buy one get one free”, or half price.
M: You aren’t going to spend all of our money, are you?
W: Of course not. The offer is too good to pass up, isn’t it?
M: I guess so. Would you mind picking up some shirts for me if you see some?
W: Sure. Would you like long sleeve or short sleeve shirts?
M: Long sleeve, please.
W: Which color would you like?
M: Green or light blue.
Text 7
M: Hello, Jean!
W: Mike Carstairs! My favorite customer. You haven’t been in for ages.
M: No, I haven’t, that’s right.
W: How are you?
M: I’m fine. I heard you weren’t well.
W: Well, I was away for a couple of weeks. But I’m fine now. Ah! You were going to the States, weren’t you?
M: I planned to go there, but I didn’t.
W: Oh, you didn’t?
M: What I have been doing is reorganizing the whole department non-stop since I saw you. And this is the first time I’ve been in here since Christmas.
W: Well, it’s good to see you. Are you ready to order?
Text 8
W: What about you, Brian? How much time do you spend on the Internet?
M: Not a lot. My computer’s a bit slow — I find it frustrating.
W: But you must admit it’s great for getting information.
M: Oh sure.
W: Well, I spend a lot of time on the Internet. What I like is being able to keep in contact with my family. I really miss them.
M: Well, you’re so far from home.
W: Yeah. What do you use it for?
M: I like being able to follow the English soccer — it’s so hard to get any information about it through the regular media. What I hate is all the junk mails. I’d average about 30 a day.
W: That’s a lot. I manage to get rid of most of that stuff.
M: So you don’t see any disadvantages at all?
W: Well, with this course I’m doing, I have to spend a couple of hours online every day, and it really costs a lot
M: True.
Text 9
W: Hi, Hugh! Can you tell me how it happened?
M: Sure, I was mountain climbing in New Hampshire in 1982. Suddenly, the weather became really bad. There was lots of snow and we couldn’t see anything. We got lost. Well, we spent 4 days on the mountain. The temperature was 20 degrees below zero. We didn’t have any equipment or food.
W: So what happened? I guess someone found you, right?
M: Yes, but we were very sick. I couldn’t move my legs because of the cold. I spent 2 months in the hospital. The doctors removed my legs.
W: Right. So you lost your legs. But you wanted to try your best to stay active.
M: That’s right. In fact, I decided to make some new legs for myself. I realized that no one has to be physically disabled. We can use modern technology to help us.
W: And you built these great new legs. Can you go mountain climbing again?
M: Yes, I can. In fact, these are better than climbing shoes. The spring design means that they are much more powerful.
Text 10
In some parts of the United States, farming is easy. But farming has always been difficult in the northeastern corner of the country, which is called New England.
New England has many trees and thin, rocky soil. Anyone who has wanted to start a new farm there had to work very hard. The first job was cutting down trees. The next job was digging the stumps(树桩)of the trees out of the soil. Then the farmer had the difficult job of removing stones from his land.
This work of removing stones never really ends, because every winter more stones appear. They come up through the thin soil from the rocks below. Farmers have to keep removing stones from the fields. Even today, farms which have been worked on for 200 years keep producing more stones. That is why stone walls are used instead of fences in New England fields. The stone walls are not high and a man can easily climb over them. However, they keep the farmer’s cows from joining those of his neighbor’s.
