W: Would you like to study with us in the library?
M: I’d rather study at home.
Text 2
W: Did the flight for Hong Kong leave ten minutes ago?
M: That’s right. It’s now a quarter after eleven.
Text 3
W: You know. I’m going to cook dinner with some friends on Thanksgiving. We’re going to make fish
soup.
M: Hmm. That’s unusual. We always have turkey, ham and mashed potatoes.
Text 4
W: Excuse me, but did you see a six-year-old boy with a red hat pass by just now? My son...my son...
M: No, madam. I was reading a newspaper; I think you should call the police for help.
Text 5
M: How about my fish?
W: It couldn’t be better. You’re really a good cook.
Text 6
W: I think my wallet was stolen, sir.
M: Do you have any reason to believe that your wallet was stolen?
W: Yes, I left it on the table half an hour ago, but when I came back from the restroom, it was gone.
M: Are you sure you left your wallet on the table?
W: Of course, sir. I planned to pay the bill before I went to the restroom.
M: Is this your wallet? One of my waiters found it in the restroom.
W: Yes, it is. I must have left it there and I forgot. Sorry.
Text 7
W: How important are friends to you, Bill?
M: That’s a strange question for this setting. Don’t you think so?
W: Well, the teacher hasn’t come in yet, class hasn’t begun, and I was just wondering about it. So, what do you think about friends?
M: I’ve never regarded them as particularly important.
W: Why is that?
M: Perhaps that’s because I come from a big family — two brothers and three sisters, and lots of cousins. That’s what’s really important to me. What about you?
W: My situation, you know, is different, so I have different ideas. To me friendship is the most important thing in life. It’s more important than even love.
M: Do you really think so ?
W: You see, if you love someone, you can always fall out of love again, and that can lead to a lot of hurt feelings. But a good friend is a friend for life.
Text 8
M: Hey, Ellen, how are you?
W: I’m fine, Bob. Aren’t you glad it’s a holiday again?
M: Yes, are you going to the concert this Friday night?
W: I haven’t thought much about it, are you?
M: Sure, would you like to go with me?
W: Sounds like fun!
M: You have to buy your own ticket, though.
W: Are you short of money again? Shall I buy your ticket?
M: Wow, where did you come into so much money?
W: You know I work as a waitress at the student centre. Anyway, now that final exams are over, I’d love a night out. If you like, let’s buy the tickets now.
M: Ok, let’s go.
Text 9
M: I’ d like to book seats for Hamlet, please.

W: Yes, we have.

W: Two and a half hours.
M: Thank you. How much will that be?
W: $10.
Text 10
A house in Liverpool caught fire on the early morning of Christmas Eve, 1996. An old lady who lived in the house alone was already in her late eighties. As she was very old and in poor health, she had great trouble walking even when things were fine. With her house on fire all around her, she was unable to go anywhere. The smoke made her choke. The fire soon spread all over the house, so she would have died without quick rescue. Firefighters arrived at the house before long and searched through the house. But unfortunately they didn’t find her, so they began to try to put out the fire. Just then a man dressed like Father Christmas was passing by, and he heard the old lady coughing badly in the house. At once he threw away all the gifts which he would give to poor families and rushed into the burning house. After a while he was seen to rush out with the old lady on his back. First he carried her to safety, and then he managed to take her to the nearest hospital. In the end, the old lady was saved.
