M: It's so hard for me to learn English. Why is it so easy for you?
W: I didn't know you were having problems. Maybe it's easier for me because I already speak two languages. But also, I really work at it.
M: Well, I always do my homework and go to classes. What else do you think would help?
W: Well, you might try reading newspapers. And I always talk to Americans when I get a chance, though sometimes it's hard.
M: But, how do you meet Americans? I only know other foreign students.
W: How about sitting next to an American at lunch, or have you ever thought of asking someone over to your house for dinner?
M: Those are good ideas. But I'm a little shy to speak English.
W: You won't learn if you don't try and speak. If I were you, I'd talk to your English teacher. He might have some good ideas.

M:Hi,Mary. We haven’t seen each other.Where have you been?
W:I have been to Australia.Do you still live there?
M:Oh,no. We have just moved into the new house.
W:Really? Congratulations!
M:Thank you and we want to buy a new television.
W:What kind of television do you want to buy?
M:A digital TV, of course, but I’m not sure about the size.Maybe we should buy a bigger one, If we buy a smaller one, we might have to change it in a few year’s time for a bigger one. That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion?
W:In my opinion, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy a very big one.
M:Any reason?
W:Yes.As I know, you sitting room isn’t big enough. If you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, and a smaller size TV can also pick up good programmes.
M:Hmm, that’s quite true.I’ll think about it.
W:You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up soon.

M:Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Pref. Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure, and there are many. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides there are shortcuts. For example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way. Knowing the rules will help you master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why this class is so popular.
