(Text 4)
M: If you’d like to go to the concert this Friday, my sister will give me two front row tickets.
W: Thank you, but I promised my friend that I’d take care of her children when she was away.
(Text 5)
M: Jane, do you like chocolate?
W: Not especially, but I am fond of ice-cream.
(Text 6)
W: Tell me, John, do you look through the web much?
M: Well, to tell the truth, I am so busy with my work. I don’t have enough time to surf the web. I usually log on twice a week about three or four times.
W: So what do you do on the Internet?
M: Well, I don’t send e-mails, I like real letters. I usually look up some information I need for my work. I think it can save a lot of time to read books in the library.
(Text 7)
W: Welcome to this job interview, Mr. Johnson. Can you tell me something about yourself?
M: Well, I left school in 1998, then I went to Cambridge University to study Economics for four years. I finished my course in 2002.
W: And where did you work after that?
M: I tried my first job in a shopping company, I joined the sales department, I worked as a clerk for only one year.
W: Why only one year?
M: Because the job was boring, and the staff was not as friendly as I had expected.
W: So what position do you want to apply for this time?
M: Well, I like challenges and I am hard working. Any position is OK. I really want to be given another chance.
(Text 8)
M: I’ve heard that you are going to take a trip to Europe. When are you leaving?
W: In about two weeks. But there are still a few things to do before I go.
M: What are these things?
W: First, I need to renew my passport. Then I’ll have my visa signed.
M: Did the agent give you some advice?
W: Yes. The manager told me that I’d better use credit card or traveler’s check if possible. And I need to bring some small cash with me. He warned me that I should exchange the money in the banks instead of on the street or with strangers.
M: So you’d better follow the advice.
(Text 9)
M: Are you free this weekend? Go to the Students’ Club with me, will you?
W: Hmm, isn’t it far away?
M: Not really. It’s only about half an hour’s walk. If you drive there, it will take you just 10 minutes at most.
W: You often go there at the weekends, don’t you?
M: Yes, four times a month.
W: So how can I enjoy myself there?
M: Well, you can play basketball and volleyball. If you are not interested, you can try some indoor exercises. They have a large indoor swimming pool and indoor track. It’s a great place to get relaxed.
W: OK. I’ll have a swim there. How about meeting me at the school gate? Let’s walk there.
M: Sure, see you then.
(Text 10)
A young man was in love with a beautiful girl. One day she said to him, “It is my birthday tomorrow.” “Oh,” said the young man. “I will send you roses, one rose for each year of your life.” The same evening he went to the flower shop. As he knew the girl was twenty two years old, he paid for twenty two roses and asked the shop assistant to send them to the girl the next day. The assistant of the flower shop knew the young man very well as he often bought flowers in his shop before. When the young man left the shop, the assistant thought: “The young man is very kind to me. He often comes to buy my flowers. In return I’ll send ten more flowers.” He did so. The next morning thirty two roses were sent to the girl. When the young man came to see her, she did not want to speak to him. And he never knew why she was so angry with him.
