(Text 1)
W: The taxi is waiting downstairs. Do you have your plane ticket?
M: Yes, it’s in my briefcase.
(Text 2)
M: Let’s find a restaurant and get something to eat on the way home.
W: OK. But we’d better stop at a gas station or we’ll run out of gas.
(Text 3)
W: What do you think about the play we just watched?
M: Well, it’s called
An Exciting Life, but I didn’t see anything exciting about it.
W: I agree. The show we saw last week was more entertaining.
(Text 4)
W: So why did you leave London then? I thought you loved it!
M: Well, I did but my wife and I couldn’t afford to live there anymore. We were struggling just to get by.
(Text 5)
M: Where did you get this souvenir? It’s beautiful.
W: I’ve been to so many places; I almost forgot. Judging from the colour of the cloth, I must have bought it in South America.
(Text 6)
W: Hello, XYZ Accounting.
M: Hello, could I speak to Brian Robinson please?
W: Mr Robinson is in a meeting right now. Can I put you through to his voice mail?
M: No, thanks. I’ll try back later. I just have a couple of quick questions about my tax return.
W: Oh, maybe another accountant could help you. I think Gina Bowers could answer your questions.
M: Thank you.
(Text 7)
W: Well, your eyes have obviously got a bit worse since your last test and I think you’re going to need to wear glasses … er … not all the time and not so much for reading or writing but definitely for driving.
M: Right. Yes. But how long does it take you to get the glasses ready?
W: By next Monday. And you can pay for them when you pick them up.
M: Can I pay by credit card?
W: You can, but there will be a slight charge if you do that.
M: Right. I’ll bring some money then, if you don’t mind.
W: No problem. Cash, credit card, cheque. All the same to us.
(Text 8)
M: Good morning. Can I help you?
W: Yes. I have a list of books that I’m looking for. First of all, do you have a book of Nelson Mandela? That’s for my book club.
M: Yes. You can find one on the third shelf, I think.
W: Well, and do you have a copy of George Orwell’s
Animal Farm?
M: Let me just look it up on the computer. Yes, it’s over there — in the Modern Classics section.
W: Yes, of course. That’s where I found
Brighton Rock last month. Thanks. And also, do you have a book on verbs and articles in French?
M: A very popular title we have is
Grammar in Use and we have plenty of copies in the Languages section. Or there’s
Better Writing but it’s a bit more expensive.
W: I’ll go with your first suggestion, I think. Thanks.
(Text 9)
W: Thanks for being here, especially just a few days before your European concert next month. Now you know what I’m going to ask. You won “Best New Artist” yesterday, and you didn’t turn up to collect the award. Why?
M: You know, when I heard that I was on the list, and I knew who the other artists were, well, just for a brief moment I guess I got a bit of a kick out of it. I mean the other bands are guys I really respect. They’re really great.
W: But it was your fans that voted for you.
M: I don’t know if that’s true. Look, I’ve been doing this kind of music for four years now, and the people who liked my music from the start know well about me, and we are all friends already. But they wouldn’t go in for that kind of thing. But, you know, you get your first number one single and the music listeners think you’re a new one and they go out and vote for you. For a moment in time you’re on everyone’s iPod, and then you’re elected.
(Text 10)
W: Good morning, everyone. With the summer just around the corner, our thoughts turn to holidays. I’d like to share with you a few tips to ensure that all goes smoothly.
First, let’s look at the suitcases. If you use expensive designer suitcases you will invite theft. A plain case won’t be noticed as much by thieves. Make sure your case is hard to open; this will make thieves give up.
Let’s talk about the journey itself now. If you’re flying with young children, a pocketful of sweets can save tears. Another point about travelling with children is carrying some toys they want to take with them. This can be a nightmare because some children want to take every toy with them on holiday! You can get around this problem by giving them a small bag of their own and telling them they can take anything they like, as long as it fits in the bag.
Once you’ve reached your destination, you’ll probably want to tell everyone home about your trip. Most people like to send postcards instead of letters. But I think photographs are much more personal, and everyone at home will be able to see what you’re up to. Thank you.
