Text 1.
M: Shall we go to Hainan for a holiday?
W: Good idea! We can take the children with us. But I hope they won’t be noisy.
Text 2
W: I was wondering if you’d like to come to my home for dinner on Saturday evening.
M: Thanks. I’d love to. My plane will arrive on Thursday morning. And I’ll be in your hometown the next day.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, could you please tell me which room Helen Johnson is in?
W: She’s in Room 305, but visiting hours are over for the day.
Text 4
W: Why, you are all wet?
M: I didn’t bring my umbrella with me. The weather forecast said it would be sunny.
W: But you could see the big black clouds this morning.
Text 5
W: Sir. Did you see the “No parking” sign?
M:I won’t be here long. My wife will finish her movie in five minutes.
W: Sorry, sir, not even for one minute. You’ll get fined if you don’t go.
Text 6
W: Hello. I’m here to book a vacation package for my husband and me. I’m planning a romantic wedding anniversary surprise for him in May.
M: You are in luck. We have a special wedding anniversary and birthday discount of 10% until June. Did you have a destination in mind?
W: Well, my husband has always wanted to go to Thailand, but I was thinking more along the lines of Italy. Which place do you think is better?
M: Well, that depends on your taste, of course. However, Tailand’s rainy season starts at the end of April, whereas Italy’s weather is beautiful.
Text 7
W: I like to go to fashion shows. They give you some idea about what kinds of clothes are coming into fashion and which ones are going out.
M: It’s nice to see those pretty models walk down the runaway in beautiful clothing. But to be frank, I don’t think those clothes are practical for everyday wear.
W: I think we’re beginning to see some practical Italian ready-to-wear collections being shown these days. And they reach the American stores just a few weeks after the major fashion shows.
M: This should be good news for America’s career women. They are this country’s most eager consumers of the Italian styles. It’s time for the Italian designers to figure out that only when they make fashions more practical will they have a bigger market here.
Text 8
M: Hi, my name is Chris York. I’m looking to move to Vancouver from Toronto, and I need to find a house for my family. I need an area that’s safe and has nice schools.
W: All right, sir. It would be helpful if I knew the age group of your children, what kind of house you wanted and what your price range was.
M: My two girls are still in elementary school. I was hoping to find a Vancouver style house up to $300,000.
W: Well, sir, we have a few areas like that in the city. Why don’t we hop in the car and I can show you houses in the east Vancouver area?
Text 9
W: Dad. Allowance day . Can I have my allowance?
M: Oh. I forgot about it.
W: You ALWAYS forgot.
M: I guess I do. How much do I owe you?
W: Just$60.
M: Sixty dollars!? Why do I owe you that much? Just seems like I paid you the other day.
W: No. You forget every Saturday, and it has been piling up.
M: Well, I’m not sure if I have that much.
W: Go to the bank. You have lots of money.
M: Lots of money, uh? Uh, well, I think the bank is closed.
W: Then, what about your secret money jar under your bed?
M: Oh, I guess I could do that. So, what are you going to do with the money?
W: I’m going to put some in savings, give some to the poor people, and use the rest to buy books.
M: Well, that sounds great, Jean.
Text 10
In Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid food. And in Japan you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink it. It shows that you’re enjoying it. But that is considered bad manners in Britain. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. So, what should you do if you visit another country? Well, you needn’t worry. Just watch carefully and try to do as they do.
