第二节

One Possible Version

Dear Collins,

It has been some time since we contacted each other last time. How is everything going with you?  I’m now living in New York as an exchange student. I’ve been excited to find everything fresh and unfamiliar here. But since it is the first time that I have come to study in the US, I sometimes find myself lonely and homesick. What’s worse, I’m not accustomed to the teaching methods which are quite different from those in China. I also feel very anxious about the difficulties that I met when communicating with local students.

Therefore, I’d like you to give me some advice on how to adapt myself to the new environment so as to increase my learning efficiency, and how to make friends with the locals to improve my spoken English.

Best wishes!

                                                                Yours,

                                                                Li Hua

听力原文:

Text 1

W: Is it raining outside, Bob?

M: Is it raining? Can’t you see that I’m almost wet to the skin?

Text 2

W: Good morning, I’m here to see Mr. Addison.

M: Mr. Addison went to Washington last Monday for a conference and he will be back on Thursday night. If you like, you may come again on Friday morning.

Text 3

W: The film has been on for ten minutes. It’s a pity you missed the first part.

M: I was about to leave my house when I had an unexpected visitor. So I was a little late.

Text 4

W: Hi, could you lend me the digital camera, David?

M: Hi, Alice. I’d like to, but it belongs to Jane.

W: Well, in that case, I’ll borrow one from Mary.

Text 5

W: Have you planned your holiday?

M: Well, I intend to go to Boston, but my wife insists on visiting the National Park and my son Tom wants to go to the beach. I think both my wife and I will give up our ideas to please Tom.

Text 6

M: Hi Alice, what are you doing? You look worried.

W: Oh. There’s something wrong with my electronic calculator.

M: Do you want me to have a look at it?

W: It’s very kind of you, but I would like to have a try first. Er... You know... I can do without it in class this afternoon.

M: Oh, well, if you need any help, just let me know. I’m free after school.

W: I will. Thank you very much.

M: You’re welcome.

Text 7

W: Many children nowadays can play some musical instruments. In my daughter’s class, some can play the piano and some can play the violin.

M: I think these children are too tired. They have to do too much homework after class and find time to learn to play a musical instrument.

W: But music gives people enjoyment. Learning to play the piano or the violin can help children develop their ability of understanding music.

M: I agree. But I still don’t think it’s a good idea to force children to learn too much when they are young. Can your daughter play the piano or the violin?

W: She can play the violin.

Text 8

M: Hi, are you being helped?

W: No, I’m not. I’m interested in some gloves.

M: All our gloves are here. What do you think of this pair here? It’s made of silk.

W: Hm, it looks nice, but I’d like to have something warm for the winter.

M: Maybe you would like heavy wool gloves. How about this pair?

W: I think that’s what I want. How much is it?

M: It’s... forty dollars.

W: It’s a little expensive. Do you think it’s possible to get a discount?

M: Hm, since you like it so much, how about a 10 percent discount. That’s the best I can offer.

W: That’s good.

M: Is there anything else I can get for you, a pair of socks?

W: No, that should be it. Thank you.

Text 9

W: Hello, Dan. I was sorry to hear that you had an accident last week. How did it happen and how are you feeling now?

M: Well, I was riding on my bicycle along the street when a taxi driver suddenly made a sharp turn in front of me. I could not stop my bicycle in time and I was knocked down. Fortunately, I only got a broken arm and a broken leg. The doctor said that I would have to stay in hospital for at least a week.

W: Do your arm and leg hurt now?

M: Yes, my leg hurts badly, but I can bear the pain. The only thing that I’m worried about is my classes. You know, next week we’re going to have our mid-term exams.

W: Well, don’t worry about the exams. I can help you.

M: Thank you, but I don’t really want to stay here that long. Anyway, thank you for coming to see me.

Text 10

My wife and I go to the theater whenever we can. But before we buy tickets, we like to know if the play is good or bad. When a new play opens, we usually read the newspaper to get information about it. Last week a new play opened at the theater. The newspaper story said it was very interesting, so we decided to go on Saturday night.

My wife took a long time to make up her mind what to wear and we left our house a little late. By the time we got to the theater, the first act had already begun. We were sorry we missed part of the play, because the rest of it was very funny. The newspaper had been right. It was very good.

After the play was over, we met some friends we hadn’t seen for a long time. They wanted to go to a night club. It had been many years since my wife and I had gone dancing, but I finally agreed. By the time we got home, it was about two o’clock in the morning. I’m not accustomed to staying out so late and I was extremely tired.

When I was younger, I didn’t have the money to go out for an evening like this. Now that I can afford it, I don’t have the energy to really enjoy it.
