Dear Nick,
I’m excited to learn that you’re visiting Handan during the Spring Festival. You’re welcome to stay with my family so you can experience a truly Chinese new year. On the Spring Festival Eve you will join us for the big dinner to celebrate the birth of a new year. Besides, you can also learn to make dumplings, which is a must for the dinner. As you know, Handan is a beautiful city with a long history. I’m also planning to show you around some of the places of interest, such as the Congtai Park and the Xuebu Bridge. I’m sure you will have a good time here.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Would you like to take a break?
W: Good idea! I’ve been reading the book for hours, and my eyes hurt.
(Text 2)
W: Well, that was delicious, Bobby. Here is my share.
M: It’s no need to do that, Cathy. I told you it was my treat.
(Text 3)
W: Shall we go now? The driver is waiting for us.
M: I’m sorry I’ll be late. I have to operate on a patient immediately. He’s badly injured in an accident.
(Text 4)
W: The ads say one must do exercise with their equipment to keep healthy.
M: That’s not helpful. What they really want is to get more money from you.
W: I think there’s truth in what you said.
(Text 5)
W: I’ve lost my key and I don’t have a spare one.
M: Never mind. I’ve a friend who is a specialist in opening locked doors without keys. I’ll telephone him to come here at once.
(Text 6)
W: Next, please.
M: Yes, I just received a telephone bill, and there’s a problem with it.
W: And what exactly is the problem?
M: There’s a call to Finland on there, and I don’t know anyone in Finland! I’m upset. Could you please take the charge off my bill?
W: May I see your bill, please?
M: Certainly. There it is. On July 1st. I really don’t know anybody in Finland.
W: OK, don’t worry. I’ll take the call off. Let’s see … It was $60. Your bill was $84, minus $60, so your new total is $24. I’m very sorry about the fault.
M: That’s OK.
(Text 7)
M: What about coming over on Sunday afternoon for a baseball party?
W: A baseball party? What’s that?
M: This Sunday’s baseball game is pretty important, so I’m inviting some people from our class over to my place to watch it.
W: I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. My brother is coming back from Mexico City. I have to pick him up at the airport.
M: That’s too bad. Well, how about coming over after you get back from the airport?
W: OK. That’s a great idea. Anything for me to bring?
M: Whatever you like to drink. We’ll order pizza for dinner.
W: That’s good.
(Text 8)
W: Hello, Mr. James. I’m calling about your talk next month. It’s getting close, and there are a couple of things I need to check with you.
M: OK.
W: I need to know if you’d prefer to give your talk in the hall or the lecture theatre.
M: I’d prefer the latter, if that’s possible.
W: That’s no problem at all. Most speakers prefer that. And what about equipment? Is there anything special you’ll need?
M: Well, apart from the usual things like a whiteboard and microphones, I’ll need a CD player.
W: I’m afraid we haven’t got one. Would an MP3 player do? We have one in the conference room.
M: That’s fine.
W: Ok, I’ll bring it there. And we look forward to seeing you on the 19th.
(Text 9)
M: I heard that you’re going back to Japan soon.
W: That’s right, and boy, I’m really busy!
M: I can imagine. But listen … I’d love to get together with you before you go. Would you like to go out for dinner one night?
W: That’s a great idea. Let’s see … Monday night is no good. I have to study for that final exam.
M: Me, too, but I’m free on Tuesday. How about going out that night?
W: I’m afraid I can’t. I’m watching a movie with Nancy at 7:00.
M: Are you going to the last class party on Friday night? Let’s go out for dinner at 6:30 before the party. It doesn’t start until 8:00.
W: There will be a dinner at the party. I love to eat, but I can’t eat two dinners.
M: There’s always Saturday night. Are you busy then?
W: No … Saturday night I’m free.
M: I’m going to a rock’n’ roll concert with a group of friends. Do you want to join us?
W: I’d really like to have a quiet dinner instead. Oh! Can I call you back? Someone’s at the door.
M: Sure. I’ll be home all afternoon.zhongkao.xuecan.net

W: Let’s make our way back out the main entrance of the library. On the left is the Student Service building. The staff there help students with a range of things, such as finding apartments and part-time jobs. Students can also make an appointment to talk to someone about personal, financial or academic problems. To the right of the Student Service building is the sports centre. It’s used by staff and students. Apart from using the exercise equipment and pool, members can take a variety of classes in basketball and dance. The building over there, in the corner, is where the Department of Science is located. Follow me through the garden. This is the most relaxing part of the schoolyard. It’s a great place to eat lunch or take a rest. If we continue out of the garden, we reach the Cafeteria. A lot of hot and cold food is sold here and because our students come from many different cultures, you can get everything from a sandwich to dumplings. On the other side of the Cafeteria is the Arts building. Students often perform musicals and plays there. Behind the courtyard is the Information Technology building. If we continue on past the courtyard, we come to the Engineering building and behind that, in the right corner, is the Main Education Centre. This is where students from overseas take courses that prepare them for studying at an Australian university.
